Top Interview Questions

There are some fundamental questions that come up at every level of hiring. I outline a few sample questions intended to gauge your critical thinking.

  1. Why are you looking for a new job? (Whether you are presently working or not you need to have a ready, clear and positive answer to this basic question)
  2. What kind of responsibility are you seeking now and in the future? (Have a definite plan in mind)
  3. What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses? (Be honest but professional as you navigate this tricky question)
  4. Why are you interested in this position? (PLEASE have an answer that is specific to the company with whom you are speaking)
  5. What do you like about your current or previous position? What are you seeking to change? (Avoid saying ANYTHING negative no matter how tempting or how comfortable you feel with the person interviewing you, this is ALWAYS a mistake. Frame everything as positively as you can without lying.)
  6. Are you willing to relocate for this position? (Do not waffle on this. YES or NO)
  7. How can you help the company achieve their goals? (Again, put some thought into this and have an answer no matter how general)
  8. What have you accomplished that makes you an outstanding candidate? (This is not the time to be shy and demure! State your reasons clearly and boldly but not arrogantly. Present FACTS not emotion.)
